About

Zhuoyun Shi
Composer
Zhuoyun Shi is a Chinese composer whose work encompasses orchestral music, chamber opera, chamber music, contemporary music for traditional Chinese instruments, and electronic and experimental composition.
She is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Composition at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. She previously earned her Bachelor of Music in Composition from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she also studied at the Middle School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music.
Her creative practice is driven by an interest in exploring diverse musical languages and constructing distinctive sonic environments. Moving between acoustic, electronic, and cross-cultural musical traditions, she approaches composition as a process of discovery, allowing each work to develop its own structure, character, and expressive identity.
DRIVEN BY MUSIC
Music has always been more than an artistic medium for me. I believe that music carries energy—the power to move, transform, connect, and transcend.I am drawn to every aspect of musical expression: the beauty of harmony, the force of rhythm, the elegance of melody, and the overwhelming impact of sound itself. Whether delicate or powerful, intimate or monumental, music possesses a unique ability to communicate what words cannot. For me, composition is not simply the construction of sound—it is an act of listening, discovery, and devotion.
EVERY WORK IS A WORLD
I view each composition as a self-contained world with its own logic, structure, and internal laws. Rather than applying a single compositional language to every project, I seek to discover the unique musical identity that emerges from each work’s subject, narrative, and artistic context. Across different genres and musical traditions, I am interested in creating distinctive sonic environments where form, timbre, gesture, and storytelling interact to create meaningful artistic experiences. Every work is a world of its own.
