Klein’s Fantasy

Beyond Inside and Outside: The Geometry of Sound and Time

For Solo Sheng | 2023

About the Project

Inspired by the mathematical concept of the Klein bottle, Klein’s Fantasy explores the transformation of space, the fluidity of time, and the dissolution of conventional boundaries. Unlike ordinary three-dimensional objects, the Klein bottle is a non-orientable surface with no distinct inside or outside.

Drawing upon this paradoxical geometry, the composition imagines a virtual space in which familiar directions lose their meaning and objects move freely through continuous rotation and distortion. Structured in four interconnected sections—Space-Time, Rotation, Time, and Convergence—the work translates abstract mathematical ideas into musical gestures and sonic transformations.

Through extended techniques on the sheng, including breath-driven articulations and intricate ornamental gestures, the music evokes a world in constant motion, where sound seems to twist, fold, and transform. As the composition unfolds, time becomes increasingly nonlinear. The beginning and ending gradually approach one another, ultimately converging into a continuous musical form. Klein’s Fantasy invites listeners to imagine a world beyond conventional spatial and temporal boundaries, where sound becomes a metaphor for the geometry of the impossible.
